Xunta de Galicia welcomes the fact that the European Commission takes into account Galicia’s points in the defense of xeito fishing gear.

The regional government positively considers the announcement made by the Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, in relation to the development of a new proposal on drifting gill nets.

The European Commissioner advises the European Parliament not to continue working on the proposed ban on drifting gill nets, which includes the xeito.

Vella argues that the issues related to drifting gill nets are to be regulated in the proposed technical measures that the EU will present in early 2016 and in which fishing gears are regulated.

The Xunta understands this as progress because with this new proposal a proposed ban on drifting gill nets, which includes the xeito, would be ineffective. In this way, those requests made by the regional government and by MEP Francisco Millán Mon are met.

The regional government has always favourably argued that the way to this prohibition must be excepted because it is a very selective fishing gear that does not perform bycatches of mammals or birds and its catches are proportionately very low in relation to the resource.

In fact, since the Xunta was informed, it has worked in the defense of the exclusion of the way in the proposed ban on drifting gillnets and referred detailed information based on the low incidence this fishing gear has on the resource through the Central Government to Brussels.
