Galicia will be the first autonomous community to have an aquaculture act, which will regulate all relevant aspects such as the possible locations or the permit granting system.

This was announced by the Secretary of Rural and Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, at the opening of the Annual General Meeting of the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP).

Rosa Quintana said the Galician mussel accounts for 95 per cent of state production, with 3,300 rafts scattered along the estuaries of this autonomous community, and that the aquaculture expansion potential is growing in Galicia.

Therefore, she ensured her department is firmly committed to this activity. And an example of this is the development of the Galician Aquaculture Strategy, which sets the direction and development of this activity, and that turns Galicia into the first European region to have this type of legal instrument.

In this regard, the head of Rural and Marine Affairs announced that shortly the parliamentary process of the Galician Aquaculture Act will begin, and said that the regional government intends to further develop an integrated and sustainable aquaculture in the environment, respecting the outline.

She also recalled that the Coastal Aquaculture Plan was devised, providing precisely the conditions for the implementation of these activities with efficiency, sustainability and environmental and landscape quality criteria.

Rosa Quintana thanked the European Aquaculture Federation for choosing Galicia as a meeting point for all professionals in this field, and insisted that this community is “an example of coexistence and complementarity between aquaculture and capture fisheries”.

With respect to the capture fisheries, she emphasized that the figures make Galicia a real power, and that last year more than 187 million kilos of fish and shellfish were traded on Galician markets, which represented an economic value exceeding EUR 430 million.

“Galicia is the second Spanish community as to freshwater fish production”, a fact which shows that the sea-fisheries sector has a big weight in the Galician economy, she stressed.
