Red tide advances through Galician estuaries

The Technological Institute for the Control of the Marine Environment (INTECMAR) has decided to close all the raft polygons due to the presence of red tide in the estuaries of Galicia.

According to Covadonga Salgado, INTECMAR head, 100 per cent of raft polygons and more than 50 per cent in shellfish areas have closed.

“We are facing a very strong episode,” she said.

The latest counts of toxic cells in the water indicate that the current episode will last a long time, at least several weeks, and perhaps more than a month.

Despite the presence of lipophilic toxins, the sector remains relatively quiet.

The red tide came at a time when the rafts have a low volume of commercially sized mussels.

But if the toxin persists beyond mid-June, when the sector season must begin, things can change dramatically, La Voz de Galicia reported.
