The Wall Street Journal has called musician Cristina Pato “one of the living masters of the gaita.’’

What’s a gaita?

You can find out when Pato performs Wednesday night at 7:30 at the Ware Center, as part of its World Music and Festivals series.

OK. Here’s the scoop. The gaita is a Galician bagpipe (Galicia is a region in northwest Spain), and Pato is one of the instrument’s masters. (She is also an accomplished pianist and composer.)

She has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma, Arturo O’Farril, Paquito D’Rivera, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Osvaldo Golijov World Orchestra, performing throughout the United States, Europe, India, Africa and China.

In her native Spain, Pato’s work with the instrument earned her pop star status, but she left to move to New York, attend Rutgers University and push her music in different directions.

Tickets to see the performer the New York Times called “a virtuosic burst of energy” are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for students.
