North High School graduate Nicole Galicia is among this year’s Gates Millennium Scholars.

She’s one of the 1,000 recipients across the nation who will receive a good-through-graduation scholarship that covers the entire cost of attending the accredited college or university of her choice.

“I was really excited,” Galicia said of finding out she was a recipient. “I kind of didn’t believe it at first.”

Galicia will use the scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison to possibly pursue a degree in political science.

Galicia also earned a combined total of $15,700 from other awards that she will rescind in order to be eligible to receive the Gates scholarship.

Galicia said she never anticipated that she’d receive the award when she was going through the extensive application process last fall.

“It’s really competive and it’s national,” Galicia said. “But I thought it was worth a shot because it was such a big deal and it could be a great thing if I got it. So I made myself apply and finish all the essays in time.”

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Approximately 5,000 students applied for this year’s scholarship.
