On the team’s risky switch back to Honda, Marquez commented: “The bike now is very good. It’s normal; in the beginning the bike is completely new – starting the project at zero. So in all the tests the bike improved – this is important. We work with the best factory in the world, Honda, HRC – so we know we have a lot of support from Honda.”

The first race in Qatar was a success for Marquez, though it is Motegi last year that sticks out most in his mind: “I enjoyed the race a lot and in the end I took my first victory in the World Championship. It was very special. The circuit in Motegi I like – we’d taken a lot of podiums, but the win in Motegi was the best part of the season.”

And whilst the winning potential is there for the Catalan youngster, he’s not getting ahead of himself: “The season is very long, and I want to try in every race to do the best. Improve the bike, improve my riding style. So we try to do a lot and I try to do my best every race.”

But with big boots to fill, the younger brother to Marc Marquez will not have the easiest of tasks: “Marc is very complete. He improved a lot when he was in 125s, and I also want to improve every year and do my best.”
