Movistar has announced plans to invest over EUR 50 million in the coming months to develop its high-speed fibre and 4G networks
in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia. By the end of the year the operator intends to expand its fibre network to reach some 351,000 households, covering half of the region’s population. The city of La Coruna will be the main beneficiary, the FTTH network scheduled to connect over 110,000 households to
the company’s 100 Mbps fibre service, with Vigo and Santiago de Compostela two other prime objectives. Movistar plans to launch fibre services in 7.1 million Spanish households by December 2014.

The operator also pledged to install 138 new base stations in the main Galician cities to improve its 4G coverage. Movistar added that it had invested EUR 650 million over the past five years in Galicia, where it has 2.4 million customers, as well as one of its main customer service centres.
