The Ministry for Rural and Maritime Affairs of Xunta de Galicia decided to open the spider crab capture season in the provinces of A Coruña and Pontevedra.

Fishing operations in these regions started on Monday and will continue until the start of the ban next year.

Meanwhile, in the province of Lugo the fishing activity will begin on 2 December and will run until the start of the 2014 ban, stated the department led by Rosa Quintana.

The spider crab catch limits will be set daily and may be changed if the situation of the resource so requires and always after consultation with the sector concerned.

The maximum catch quotas would be set at 35 kilograms per boat plus 35 kg for each enlisted crewman onboard.

The Galician Government ordered that the ship owners based in Galicia and having authorized their operating permit for a certain fishing gear directed at the spider crab or a temporary gear change for one that has been authorized for catching this resource can participate in the season.

The work schedule shall be established by regulation for the fishing gear with which the fishing activity is intended.

O Grove sailors anticipate the spider crab season will start this year with few catches. They explain that the northern winds and the presence of the moon will move away the crustacean, pushing it to its den on the sea floor, the newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported.

Anyway, for many of the owners who are dedicated to capturing the spider crab this situation is “good news” because the fewer resources are caught in the first days, the earlier the vessels that only go to catch it just before Christmas will be taken out.

According to the main chief of A Illa, Ángel Iglesias, this year 11 ships have been incorporated to the spider crab season.

“As the shellfish capture fails, everyone takes advantage of all the fishing gears they have to rotate and find out a way of making a living,” the leader pointed out.

In O Grove it was expected that about fifty boats will got to catch the spider crab.
