One of two people who tried to help save a Sioux Falls woman and a toddler who ended up dying in an apartment fire called the woman a “true hero.”

Fifty-four-year-old Warren Vick was driving to work Tuesday when he saw smoke coming out of a Sioux Falls apartment.

Twenty-nine-year-old Sulmi Guerra Sandoval and 2-year-old Eli Galicia died in the apartment fire, but not before Guerra-Sandoval lowered three children to Vick out a second-story window.

A second passerby, Cullen Dossett, arrived as Vick was placing the third child on the ground. Vick lifted Dossett up toward the window and at one point, held Guerra Sandoval’s hands.

Dossett tells The Argus Leader (http://argusne.ws/ZAgbQC) that her hand slipped out of his.

He says, “The terror on her face will haunt me forever.”
