Galician mussel labelling research requested to Brussels

A Spanish MEP asked the European Commission (EC) to start research on the Galician mussel labelling due to alleged irregularities in the detailed information on the packaging of these products.
MEP Antolin Sanchez Presedo, from PSOE, complains that in the market there are some canned products from Chile carrying the words ‘Product made in Galicia.’
The legislator asked Brussels, through the Community Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki, “to verify that the message ‘Product made in Galicia’ is not misleading, given the designation of origin ‘Galician Mussel.'”
For Sanchez Presedo, this potential confusion is “driving down prices” of the Galician mussel with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
“The problem is that while shopping, consumers who read ‘Product made in Galicia’ do not think they are paying for food coming from another country, since it is not certified to be of Galician origin,” he explains.
The Spanish MEP argues that the EC must “ensure that the requirements of providing consumers with information on the indication of the country of origin are met,” EFE agency reports.
The mussel sector provides jobs to 19,000 people, mostly in Galicia.
The mussel represents almost 96 per cent of the Galician aquaculture production.
