The Galician Federation of Guilds agreed this weekend, at a meeting held in Ames town, Coruña, to call for a large demonstration against the management of Galician Ministry of Marine Affairs.

While the growing controversy around the proposed draft of the Aquaculture Act has had a big importance in that decision, the situation of sectors such as the purse seine or the problems that artisanal fisheries face to survive also influence on it, Faro de Vigo reported.

A provisional date for this protest to be held in Santiago de Compostela is 27 February.

The Galician Federation of Guilds brings together 62 groups in Galicia, however, the meeting was attended by more than 40 of them, which massively supported the proposal.

The brotherhoods fear the new aquaculture Act will bring to an end the traditional model of fishing in Galician estuaries, therefore they request its withdrawal and the drafting of another proposal.

According to the Federation, the text of the Act the Ministry of Aquaculture and Marine Affairs of Galicia, drafted without consulting the industry, leaves the management of aquaculture in the hands of big business, opens the door to the construction of large plants in fishing and shellfishing areas, and prevents the voluntary transformation of shellfish gathering into aquaculture, La Opinion reported.

In addition, the guilds also stated that the text does not make clear whether the gathering permit of shellfishing on foot is compatible with aquaculture.

For its part, the mussel farming sector has also voiced its strong criticism regarding the Aquaculture Act, as was demonstrated in two meetings held in Vilagarcia, where about 700 mussel farmers gathered to lay grounds for a possible call for mobilizations.
