Galician Xunta welcomes that purse seine representatives positively value the quota reallocation proposal designed by the Galician government.

This was stated by the Minister of Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, yesterday after her meeting with representatives of associations of this fishing sector of Galicia and various unions.

The aim of the meeting was to find common grounds over the proposal designed by the Xunta, and the request of the sector itself, which is seeking a “minimum base” of fishing possibilities for vessels that do not have quota. Thus, it contemplates the allocation of a tonne minimum of horse mackerel for each boat depending on the size and starting from 10,000 kilos for the smaller (5 GTs) ones.

Quintana said that those attending the meeting “positively valued it and now each of them is going to consult their associations so that the sector may tell us if it accepts the proposal.”

To ratify this working model, the Xunta will inform the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment the decision taken by the sector.

The meeting was also attended by the Director General of Fisheries, Aquaculture Technology and Innovation, Juan Maneiro. The industry was represented by delegates from the Purse Seine Shipowners’ Association of Galicia (Acerga), Galician Seiners, Galician Guild Federation of Shipowner Cooperative of Ribeira, Fish Producers Organisation of Lugo (OPP 07 Lugo) and Cooperative of Shipowners Port of Vigo (ARVI). In addition, representatives of the Galician Inter-Union Confederation (CIG), General Union of Workers (UGT) and Workers Commissions (CCOO) were present as well.
