The alleged leader of a drugs gang who planned to sell three tonnes of cocaine in Britain was caught in Spain after flashing €500 bills.

Gary Williams, 41, from Kingston upon Thames, southwest London, spread out the money on a table as he apparently completed a deal with two Dutch accomplices in full view of the staff of a luxury hotel.

The National Crime Agency had been following a British gang for eight months and had tipped off its Spanish counterpart. The Dutch men, who had stayed at the Hotel Reis Católicos in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain,
