The European Commission (EC) recommends a technique developed by the Centre for Marine Research (CIMA) of Galicia as a reference for the diagnosis of oyster bonamiosis.

This was announced on Tuesday by the Undersecretary of Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, in CIMA facilities in Vilanova de Arousa, where she met with representatives of the research areas of the centre.

The head of the Undesecretariat of Marine Affairs explained that the European Union (EU) issued a decision in September this year on the regulation of aquatic animal health management, which “expressly states as a recommended technique for oyster bonamiosis one of those developed by CIMA team, the one for the diagnosis via PCR in real time.

This EU decision (enforcement decision (EU) 2015/1554 of the Commission of 11 September 2015) includes aspects on surveillance, eradication measures and diagnostic tools for combating the diseases of aquatic organisms, including oyster bonamiosis.

Bonamia ostrae is a protozoan parasite that affects the European oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the diagnosis via PCR (polymerase chain reaction) in real time is a molecular technique for the diagnosis of this parasite that seeks to find fragments of its DNA in the samples.

Quintana pointed out that the European reference laboratory for mollusc diseases selected CIMA technique as the most suitable one after testing it along with others from other national reference laboratories in Europe.

In this regard, she noted that the technique developed by the centre “is really precise and accurate, more than those that previously existed and also faster than them.” Thus, it makes it possible to identify pathology faster and aids in decision making.

Quintana stressed that the development of techniques such as these demonstrates the research potential of centres in Galicia such as the CIMA and its professionals.
