“The clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine – according to an embarrassed town after a Google Translate mishap.
The annual event is held to celebrate the rapini, a green cruciferous vegetable where the edible parts are the leaves, buds, and stems. The buds somewhat resemble broccoli, but do not form a large head.
With the mis-translation, the rapini festival (Feira do grelo) became known as the Feria Clitoris or ‘Clitoris Festival’.
With more than 2.4 million Galician speakers in the town of As Pontes in Galicia, northwestern Spain, the town unveiled their new website which had it advertised as an X-rated festival.
Monserrat García, spokeswoman for As Pontes town hall, was reporte by Spanish news daily, Local as saying:
“Google translate recognized our Galician word grelo as Portuguese and translated into the Spanish clítoris.”
“It’s a very serious error on the part of Google and we are thinking about making an official complaint for Google to properly recognise the Galician language so this kind of thing doesn’t happen again,” Monserrat added.
Thankfully for now, the website has been corrected.
