A town in Galicia, in northern Spain, was looking forward to its annual turnip greens festival this year, but residents were left pretty embarrassed after a Google Translate error made their innocent little culinary festival sound a whole lot more X-rated. They used Google Translate for the Spanish-language version of the text.
The town is apparently considering filing a complaint with Google, which has since fixed the translation error, but may reconsider.
A Google spokesperson said: “Google Translate is an automatic translator – that is, it works without the intervention of human translators, using state-of-the-art technology instead”.
On the town hall’s Castilian Spanish website, the festival description read, “The clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine”, according to The Local.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating the female form in all its glory, vaginas and all, but what does one do at a clitoris festival?
The error meant visitors looking for event information on the Castillian page were directed to one on the “fiera clitoris“, or clitoris festival.
It all goes to show, we shouldn’t take those translations too seriously, as often what is automatically produced doesn’t even make a lot of sense.
The mistake is understandable, given that Galician and Portuguese are closely related. The Guardian noted that the Galician word, “grelo” is now translated as “brote” or sprout. Rapini is commonly called broccoli raab or rabe in the United States. But García remains dissatisfied: “It’s still not the best way of describing grelo, as it is a vegetable from the turnip family”.
The vegetable is most commonly eaten with cured pork and potatoes.
The festival, which promotes regional products, is scheduled to take place on February 15th 2016.
