You’ve tripped up another innocent user yet again.
The town of As Pontes in Galicia holds a yearly festival to celebrate grelo (a local vegetable similar to spinach).
Unfortunately, to their horror, they had been inviting people to take part in a “clitoris festival“.
As local organizers sought to promote next year’s festival, which will take place February 15, town hall staff relied on Google Translate to give them the Spanish language translation of “Feria do grelo” (Rapini Festival) on the town’s website, The Local, reports Spain’s La Voz de Galicia.
But on the Castillian Spanish version of the town’s website, powered by Google Translate, the Galician word for rapini, “grelo“, was mistaken for the Portuguese “grelo“, a slang term for clitoris.
“The clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine”, delighted punters were informed.
The error was not discovered until Castilian-speaking rapini fans visited the site to read about the upcoming festival and found themselves reading about a local clitoris festival instead of the benefits of the local vegetable.
Montserrat Garcia, the town’s spokeswoman, revealed that they were unaware of the translation error.
Google Translate may be free, and widely used yet we should always aim for reliability.
The particular vegetable, a local delicacy, is known as grelo.
“It was quite a surprise”. The town is considering complaining to Google on the grounds that it should recognize the Galician language. The Galician word for rapini is grelo. But Garcia admitted she is still dissatisfied; according to her, “grelo” is “a vegetable from the turnip family”. When Google Translate generates a translation, it looks for patterns in hundreds of millions of documents to help decide on the best translation for you.
A Google spokesperson said that Google Translate will not always be ideal because it is machine-generated.
