A culinary festival celebrating grelo, the leafy green vegetable that is a staple in the Galician town of As Pontes in north-west Spain, saw a sudden surge of interest recently – and the good townsfolk naturally thought their marketing initiative had worked this year. Google Translate, according to town representative Montserrat Garcia, mistook the Galician word for the Portuguese one, which awkwardly can be used as a slang term for clitoris.
García says they investigated Google Translate and found that it translates any mention of the word “grelos” on their website to clitoris.
A town in Galicia, Spain is planning on taking action against Google Translate after the app mistranslated the name of their popular annual rapini festival to “clitoris festival“.
Town hall spokeswoman Monte García told The Local that Google Translate read the word as the Portuguese word grelo and translated that to the Spanish word clitoris.
Google Translate has since changed the translation, with grelo now said to mean “brote” or sprout.
Google has confirmed that the translation error has now been fixed, but if you’re still intrigued by the idea of a vagina festival you can head further afield to Japan, where they’re actually a thing.
A Spanish town got lips smacking in anticipation last week after the municipal website announced a forthcoming “Clitoris Festival”.
The text continued, “Since 1981, the festival has made the clitoris one of the star products of the local gastronomy”.
More than 2.4 million people speak Galician, which is considered to be closely related to Portuguese. Rapini, a traditional Galician dish, is a subspecies of turnip and is the southern European equivalent of “turnip tops” or “turnip greens”, which we in the USA may better know as broccoli raab.
The festival – which promotes regional products rather than the female anatomy – is set to take place next February.
