But as it turns out, the word means something very different in Portuguese, something the staff at town hall later found out when they tried translating the text into Castillian Spanish for their official website.
On the town hall’s Castilian Spanish website, the festival description read, “The clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine”, according to The Local.
Thanks to a Google Translate error, the town of As Pontes in Galicia, Spain, went to great lengths to advertise its annual rapini vegetable festival as the “Clitoris Festival”.
According to The Local, Google Translate had switched the event’s advertising from Galician to Castilian Spanish, and in the process had somehow translated grelo, the Galician word for “turnip greens”, into the Spanish word for “clitoris“.
‘Since 1981, the festival has made the clitoris one of the star products of the local gastronomy’.
“It was quite a surprise”, Montserrat García, the town’s spokesperson, told the Guardian. “At first, we didn’t believe what we were seeing”. They used Google Translate for the Spanish-language version of the text.
She added: ‘We discovered that Google translates any mention of grelos, on any website, to clitoris.
In Portugal, grelo is the slang word for clit, not quite the same thing as a leafy veg.
Officials in As Pontes are considering filing a formal complaint with Google.
The error meant visitors looking for event information on the Castillian page were directed to one on the “fiera clitoris“, or clitoris festival. “It’s become a means – albeit a very odd means – of promoting our festival”.
A spokesperson for Google has confirmed that the incorrect translation has since been fixed.
