Since 1981, the festival has made the clitoris one of the star products of the local gastronomy’.
According to The Local, Google Translate had switched the event’s advertising from Galician to Castilian Spanish, and in the process had somehow translated grelo, the Galician word for “turnip greens”, into the Spanish word for “clitoris“.
A town has been left embarrassed after their annual event was misrepresented as a “clitoris festival” – thanks to a Google Translate error.
The error was not discovered until Castilian-speaking rapini fans visited the site to read about the upcoming festival and found themselves reading about a local clitoris festival instead of the benefits of the local vegetable.
The Guardian has reported that Montserrat GarcÃa, a spokesperson for the town, described the revelation as “quite a surprise”.
As local organizers sought to promote next year’s festival, which will take place February 15, town hall staff relied on Google Translate to give them the Spanish language translation of “Feria do grelo” (Rapini Festival) on the town’s website, The Local, reports Spain’s La Voz de Galicia. “At first, we didn’t believe what we were seeing”.
Classic move, blaming Google translate.
A Google spokesperson said: “Google Translate is an automatic translator – that is, it works without the intervention of human translators, using state-of-the-art technology instead”.
“It’s a very serious error on the part of Google and we are thinking about making an official complaint for Google to properly recognize the Galician language so this kind of thing doesn’t happen again”, town hall spokeswoman Monserrat GarcÃa told The Local. “If people come across incorrect or inappropriate translations, they can let us know about them and we’ll be happy to fix them as soon as possible”.
