Actor-director XU Zheng 徐崢 has entered the record books again as his latest comedy smashed opening day records in China.
Accounting for approximately 62.6% of all screenings on Friday, Lost in Hong Kong 港囧 earned RMB208 million (US$32.6 million) from approximately 6.50 million admissions yesterday.
This represents a new record for the biggest opening of all time for a local film, surpassing Monster Hunt 捉妖記‘s RMB171 million (US$26.8 million). It also represents the best opening of all time for a 2-D release in China and the highest gross ever for the midnight screenings of a local film.
A travelogue comedy about a man caught in a murder case while on a trip to Hong Kong with his wife and brother-in-law, Lost in Hong Kong is the thematic follow-up to Xu’s Lost in Thailand 人再囧途之泰囧 (2012), which was the record holder for the highest grossing local film of all time before Monster Hunt. Hong Kong and Thailand are both distributed by Beijing Enlight Pictures Co Ltd 北京光線影業有限公司.
Lost in Hong Kong is set to dominate over the weekend, but it faces tough competition when Saving Mr. Wu 解救吾先生 (starring Andy LAU 劉德華) and LU Chuan 陸川‘s Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe 九層妖塔 which both open next week for the week-long National Day holiday.
The Third Way of Love 第三種愛情, the romance drama directed by South Korea’s John H. LEE 이재한 | 李宰漢, also had a solid opening on Friday, earning RMB15.9 million (US$2.50 million) with a screening share of approximately 14.4%.
