Jessica Kenny’s goal in the fourth minute of overtime, on a feed from Diana Galicia, pushed New Dorp past McKee/Staten Island Tech, 2-1, Tuesday in PSAL girls’ soccer action in New Dorp.
This is the Central Cougars’ first victory over MSIT since the 2012-2013 season, when they defeated the Seagulls, 2-0.
“Teams like Tech have certainly been tough the last few years,” said New Dorp coach Nick Kvasic. “But we are imprvoing and the girls were ecstatic about this win.
MSIT scored first in the first half as Samantha Pannone got one past New Dorp goalie Alyson Schwartz, who finished the game with 13 saves.
In the 25th minute of the second half, ND would even it up as Kenny knocked one in on a pass from midfield from Galicia.
“We weren’t sending the ball to the forward line accurately enough,” said Kvasic. “So I told my girls keep pounding and whatever happens happens.”
The two defenses battled into the first overtime. MSIT goaltender Emily Zavilowitz (10 saves) was matching Schwartz shot-for-shot until Kenny, on a pass from Galicia once again, found the back of the net for her second goal and a 2-1 lead.
Maria Balderas, Ashley Kenny and Danielle Petti spearheaded the Cougars’ defensive effort. Kvasic also commented on Galicia, who “totally controlled” the midfield action.
“We are shooting to make the playoffs,” noted Kvasic. “We’ve missed it the last few years to teams like MSIT and Curtis, so this was a big win for us.”
ND moves to 3-2 in PSAL action, while MSIT falls to 2-3. The Cougars visit Port Richmond Saturday at noon.
