Galician newspaper La Region, reported that a pile of stones which marked the location of a 6,000 year old neolithic burial space near the town of Cristovo de Cea had been removed to make way for a modern picnic bench.
Local environment groups protested the rolled concrete and modern picnic bench that was erected over the burial spot, stating that the city had caused permanent damage to a prehistoric artefact. In the past, Galicia hosted Neolithic and megalithic sites, such as dolmens and especially burial grounds.
Local officials claim they were unaware of the existence of the ancient site, with José Luis Valladares, town mayor saying, “No one told me.”
