In Galician fish markets more than 2,000 tonnes of Atlantic bonito have been unloaded since earlier this year, which represented an economic value of more than EUR 8.3 million.
This was emphasized this morning by the secretary of Rural and Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, during her visit to the fish market in Burela to attend the bonito auction. She also stressed that landings performed at the markets of Burela amounted to more than 1,000 tonnes of tuna worth nearly EUR 4.5 million.
In this regard, the head of Rural and Marine Affairs highlighted that the Atlantic bonito for the fleet of Burela and for much of that from Galicia represents one of the most important seasonal catches.
In addition, she noted that his landing at ports makes it possible to make a healthy product combining an unbeatable quality as well as an environmentally-friendly capture system available to consumers.
Rosa Quintana stressed that her secretariat strongly supports and encourages the marketing of products from fisheries and aquaculture, including bonito, as one of the pillars on which the welfare of seafarers is based and in particular that of the bonito sector in Burela.
She also recalled the support of the regional government to promote this species through Faino Bonito advertisement campaign, which aims to promote the consumption of fresh Atlantic bonito.
The Secretariat of Rural and Marine Affairs produced a promotional material to inform consumers on the benefits of incorporating fresh Atlantic bonito to their menu. Thus, more than 145,000 leaflets, 2,000 posters and 1,400 displays were delivered for the 2015 campaign in different commercial spots and 400 billboards were also made.
