The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA) ensured that the anchovy fishing season in the Bay of Biscay will continue “open under usual standards” until the quota ends, sources from the Government of Cantabria has informed.

Thus, the central Government rejects the immediate closure request performed on 13 August by the government of Cantabria.

The Cantabrian request is based on the numerous complaints received from the fisheries sector, given the anchovy low prices and the risk of overfishing.

The Director General of Fisheries and Food of Cantabria, Marta Lopez, said they told Magrama about the disagreement of the regional government with its decision to extend the quota for 2015 by 10 per cent. And its response was that the quota assigned for this year is higher, of 22,923 tonnes, since 1,673 tonnes from the surplus belonging to last year is added, the EFE agency reported.

The response of the central Government reassures the Galician fishermen, who feared losing the only anchovy fishery only where they can operate at this time, since the one covering Finisterre and the Gulf of Cadiz has been closed since February, recalled Alberto Castro, secretary of the Association of Purse Seiner Owners of Galicia (ACERGA).

For his part, the president of the Galician Federation of Associations, Tomas Fajardo, showed surprise about the request made by Cantabria. In this regard, he stressed that it is normal that the community informs the others about their initiatives because all are affected, since they share the fishery ground, reported Diario Montañes.

Meanwhile, sources in the Secretariat of Marine Affairs of Galicia said they had no record of such order to close the fishery of the Bay of Biscay, and ensured that no other Administration had submitted any questions about that possibility.
