Rea maintains a commanding 125-point alead in the championship from Sykes, and with only four rounds and 200 points remaining it surely won’t be long – barring a disaster – before he is confirmed as champion.

Daniel Rivas Fernandez, of Moana Galicia, Spain, was transported by REACH Medical Air Services to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he also died from his injuries.

But Davies was again too strong for the rest of the field as he closed in on the top two in the championship.

“Jonathan and I had a great battle for the entire first race”.

Aprilia Racing riders Jordi Torres and Leon Haslam were fourth and fifth respectively after a 25 lap duel. Both riders finished comfortably ahead of Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia), who had a lonely ride to sixth after failing to finish in the first encounter.

In the end, Davies took a pole position to chequered flag sixth WSB win of his career, 1.798secs clear of Sykes with Rea three tenths further back in third.

Jonathan Rea: “I tried a lot but there was nothing I could do to go through on Tom in race one”.

In a chat with media afterwards, Davies said that after winning race one the small tweaks that the technical team made to the bike helped him to win race two as well.

The Knighton-born rider outperformed team-mate Davide Giugliano by two tenths of a second to prevail with a best lap of one minute and 22.101 seconds.

The Sepang worldwide Circuit in Malaysia will host the 10th round of the series, from Friday, July 30 to Sunday, August 2.
