Madrid, Jun 22 (EFE) .- Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his Portuguese counterpart Pedro Passos Coelho will chair the 28th Spanish-Portuguese summit to intensify bilateral cooperation to the benefit of both European countries.
The summit will take place just hours before a European Union meeting over Greece’s debt crisis, to be held later on Monday in Brussels.
The Spanish-Portuguese summit will be held in the northwestern Spanish town of Baiona and will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the accession of Spain and Portugal to the EU.
Rajoy and Passos Coelho will be accompanied by their ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Interior, Industry, Development and Employment, along with the secretaries of state for Tourism.
According to government officials, the summit will also focus on issues present on the agenda for Monday night’s EU summit in Brussels and the European Council meeting on Thursday and Friday.
On Monday night, Eurozone leaders will parse out the negotiations between Greece and financial institutions to agree on a list of reforms and allow Greece access to its pending bailout payment worth 7.2 billion euros ($7.6 billion).
Rajoy has been advocating solidarity with Greece provided that the government under Alexis Tsipras assumes its responsibility and respects the signed agreements, a position shared by the Portuguese government.
The two officials will also discuss during the summit a European Commission proposal to host refugees, a possibility both countries have met with hesitancy.
