The Fisheries Committee of the Parliament of Galicia agreed to urge the Xunta to include specific measures for SMEs of the processing sector in the development of the new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) to obtain the necessary support and funding for updating and improving their competitiveness.

The approved proposal also demands “the promotion of various support lines, strengthening the existing plans at present, for financing and internationalization of the fish and seafood processing industry, giving special consideration to SMEs in the canning sector.”

PPdeG Fisheries spokesperson Jose Manuel Balseiro stressed the importance of the canneries, not only because of their direct impact on the populations where they operate, but also because of the value they add to the Galician tuna and mussel, among other products.

On the other hand, ANFACO-CECOPESCA secretary general Juan Manuel Vieites on Wednesday told Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella about the importance for the Community processing industry to have a contingent of tuna loins amounting to 30,000 tonnes without tariffs for the next three years.

Vietes emphasized that an adequate supply of tuna loins “is essential to maintain competitiveness and viability of the European canning industry, which Spain leads with 67 per cent of European production of canned tuna.”

Anfaco Secretary General also told Vella about the need for “fair competition” in the market between Community products and those from other countries. Therefore, he asked the European Commission to implement the regulation to combat illegal fishing in trade negotiations.

The canning industry claims that competing countries must meet the same sustainability criteria as the EU industry, with regard to labour, social and environmental standards.
