The head of the Secretary of Rural and Marine Affairs of Xunta de Galicia, Rosa Quintana, has called for an increase of fishing possibilities for the Spanish fleet in 2016.

During a meeting of the Advisory Council on Fisheries, in which government officials and the autonomous communities participated, Quintana stressed that Spain “has done what was necessary” as to fishing issues.

After noting that currently there is better scientific evidence in the fact that three years ago on the state of fish stocks, the Galician official claimed that Spain is “in a position to request” for the increase in the possibilities for next year.

Meanwhile, the head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), Isabel García Tejerina, met with representatives of the autonomous communities to prepare the new appointment of the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the European Union (EU), to be held on 16 June in Luxembourg.

The Council will analyse the latest report from Brussels on the state of fish stocks, which indicates that the fishing situation has improved in the Atlantic Ocean but in the Mediterranean Sea it is more delicate.

For Quintana, progress was made in most fisheries so a large part of the resources are in conditions to achieve the “maximum sustainable yields (MSYs)”.

Moreover, the Fisheries Sector Conference approved the publication of a ministerial order through which aid will be convened due to the definitive cessation of fishing activity and the temporary fishing activity, MAGRAMA reported.

Such aid will serve to scrap vessels intended for permanent cessation of fishing activity and will include measures to accompany the fleets concerned about plans to adjust the fishing effort of the northern and southern hake, Norway lobster and bluefin tuna.

In Galicia, 84 ships requested aid for scrapping while subsidies total EUR 10.3 million, the newspaper Faro de Vigo reported.
