Galicia will be Spain’s first autonomous community to have an aquaculture act, which will regulate aspects such as the possible farming locations and license concessions, Faro de Vigo reports.

The Secretary of Rural and Marine Affairs for the region, Rosa Quintana, announced the new act at the opening of the Annual General Meeting of the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP).

The Galician aquaculture act will enter into force soon, as the regional government intends to further develop an integrated and environmentally sustainable aquaculture, the secretary said.

Quintana said the Galician mussel accounts for 95% of state production, with 3,300 rafts scattered along the estuaries of the region, highlighting also that the aquaculture expansion potential in Galicia is growing.
