A team of ‘over the hill’ walkers from Worksop are taking on a challenging trek through Portugal to raise cash for Bassetlaw Hospice.
Maria Batty, an aromatherapist at the hospice, her husband Steve and their friends Alison and John Elliott and Father Bill Bergin are taking on the Portuguese Interior Way on
2nd June.
Starting in the colourful second city of Portugal, Porto, the Portuguese Interior Way covers 236km through Northern Portugal into the south of Galicia and Santiago de Compostela.
The walk then goes through natural parks and crosses the Minho estuary by boat into Tuy and continues further along the coast to the Rías Baixas.
Maria said this week: “We enjoy walking and have done other routes in the past, Father Bill approached Alison to see if she would like to walk with him and the seed was sown!”
“She persuaded John, Stephen and I to accompany them despite her claim ‘she was never doing one of those walks again!’.”
“We are hoping to raise around £2,000 for Bassetlaw Hospice and hope that our friends, family and the local community will support us in our efforts.”
Helen Eshelby, fundraising coordinator for the hospice, said: “We are extremely grateful to all of the team for taking on this challenge.”
“We really appreciate how much time and effort goes into organising these events and we are truly grateful to everyone involved.”
