Certification of Mexillon de Galicia with Protected Designation of Origin doubled in 2014, as it is reflected in the annual report of the Regulatory Board.

The volume of certified mussel at port exceeded net certified 33.1 million kg compared to 16.7 million landed in 2013, thus reaching a new milestone.

In addition, during the past financial year the Regulatory Board created a Directory of Brands to respond to new companies requesting the use of the seal Mexillon de Galicia.

The volume increase occurred despite the red tide that caused three intense administrative closures of raft polygons and forced them to interrupt the certification activities.

The main destination of the certified mussels continues being the processing industry, which absorbed 90 per cent of the total volume with 29.9 million net kg. This figure is almost double that recorded in 2013 (15.2 million) and reveals the growing importance of DOP as a differentiator in the canning market, an area in which the Galician origin constitutes a claim of prestige for the consumer.

In the case of mussels destined for the fresh market, the volume also doubled, going from 1.5 million kg in 2013 to 3.1 million in 2014.

The increase in demand matched the promotional survey launched at sale points, under the theme “Fall in love with a Galician,” which marked the entrance of fresh mussel with DOP in more than 1,500 supermarkets of El Corte Ingles, Vegalsa-Eroski, Gadis, Froiz, Alcampo, Carrefour, Consum, El Arco, Sabeco, Lupa and Telco.

Furthermore, the certified mussel in the ports meant at first sale a value amounting to EUR 14.7 million, of which EUR 12,9 million corresponded to the mussel intended to the industry, and EUR 1.8 million to fresh mussel.

For the Regulatory Board, the data provided in the 2014 annual report indicate that Mexillon de Galicia is getting more and more prestige and visibility in the market. However, the agency aims to achieve a better understanding of the label in the market, transmitting consumers guarantees and advantages of the PDO and increasing the product value.

The processing industry in 2014 sold more than 13 million cans of Mexillon de Galicia, which implied the format with PDO with the highest percentage in the processed product market. It was followed in importance by the frozen half shelled mussel (391,000 kg), frozen product (181,000 kg) and frozen mussel in its juice (149,000 kg).

Moreover, in 2014 the various products with PDO (canned, frozen, refrigerated, and others) consolidated its international presence through exports to various countries, which include Italy, France, Germany, the United States, Mexico and Singapore.

As for the fresh market during 2014 about 1.5 million kilos of Mexillon de Galicia with PDO. The main geographical destination was the Iberian peninsula and the main sales channel was the fishmonger of big commercial surfaces.
