The head of the Secretariat of Marine Affairs of Galicia, Rosa Quintana, ensured members of Galician parliament that Xunta de Galicia was able to “cut” the compensation claimed by two aquaculture companies for the suspension of their projects, and will have to pay only 10 per cent of sanctions.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Galician government must compensate the firm Insuíña (subsidiary of Pescanova) with EUR 1.1 million for failing to build a fish plant in Touriñán.

And the autonomous administration will have to compensate company Acuinor with EUR 700,000 because it could not perform the construction of a fish farm in Rinlo.

The court ruling means that the autonomous government will have to pay a total of EUR 1.9 million to both companies, when initial claims totalled EUR 17.5 million.

The Galician secretary expressed strong criticism to the bipartite Xunta, which has paralyzed both projects in 2006 and 2008, respectively. But she stressed that despite this, her administration defended the community interests in court.

Quintana stated that those responsible for the regional government at that time “preferred to pull forward” with the rejection of these facilities, “which were viable,” although it was known that the companies were to seek compensation, the agency Europa Press reported.

In addition, she announced to Parliament that “in the near future” the new Galician aquaculture policy will allow the launch of an aquaculture facility in Cervo, Lugo “with an investment of EUR 24 million” and will create “25 direct and 50 indirect jobs”.
