Wednesday, April 15, 2015
Havana, Apr 15.- The 26th Festival “La Huella de España” will end in Cuba on 19 April with the premiere of an exemplary piece of the Galician roots in this country, today announced the choreographer Irene Rodriguez.
The artistic director of the festival is putting the finishing touches on “El último gaitero de La Habana” (The Last Bagpiper in Havana), a dancing and musical piece that will offer a contemporary view of the Galician folklore, something that has hardly been explored, even in Galicia.
With this play, the artist -winner of the Latin American Choreography Award 2012- intends to pay tribute to Eduardo Lorenzo, the last Galician bagpiper that took root in Cuba.
Lorenzo made history on the island because he devoted himself to the task of transmitting to the future generations how this instrument is played and made, considered here as an icon of the Spanish culture, said Rodriguez.
The 26th edition of the festival is dedicated to the autonomous community of Galicia, a region of extensive links to this Caribbean archipelago for the vast Galician emigration that arrived on the island in the early twentieth century.
Rodriguez invited the composer and guitarist of her namesake company Noel Gutierrez and the choir of the Cultural Society ‘Rosalia de Castro’, to play along with the pipe band of Havana, directed by master Arturo Perez.
Nine dancers and 15 musicians will be performing the piece that is to be premiered at Mella Theater, during a gala that will also feature the National Ballet of Cuba.(Prensa Latina)
