This week the National Association of Canned Fish (Anfaco-Cecopesca) informed a delegation of senators on the current status and future prospects of the cannery and processing industry of fishery and aquaculture products in Galicia.

In the meeting, which took place during a visit the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food made to Galicia, Anfaco managers emphasized the challenges facing the sector to maintain its leadership position and competitiveness in an increasingly globalized market.

Lawmakers received a complete industry report, which included, among other things, its statistical data on production, sales and export.

Regarding the future regulation of autonomous tariffs for fisheries products within 2016-2018 term, Anfaco managers stressed the importance of securing raw material for the sea product canning and processing industry of Spain and the Community, in order to maintain the activity and the important figures of employment generated by the sector in Spain.

Moreover, regarding trade agreements with third countries, senators were told about the essential need for all operators to abide by the same rules to ensure fair competition in the markets thus the processing and canning industry of sea and aquaculture products in the EU remains competitive vs. products from third countries.

Anfaco also informed the Senators about their claim for an industrial policy favoured by administrations, to furnish the sector with a stable and long-term legal framework, providing the necessary legal certainty, better planning of the activity consistent with sustainable exploitation of resources and ensuring the future of their investments in a globalized and internationalized market. In this context, an energy policy becomes extremely important, given that energy costs are highly relevant to enable industrial competitiveness.

Besides visiting Anfaco-Cecopesca’s headquarters and laboratories, Senators toured the ship on which Anfaco Pilot Plant is placed in the Business Park of Porto do Molle (Nigran), and some member companies of this association.
