Galicia has achieved a higher percentage of state aid in the distribution of 2014-2020 European Maritime Fisheries, from receiving a 44 per cent for the 2007-2014 period to 51 per cent.
This was announced by Secretary General of Marine Affairs under Xunta de Galicia, Juan Maneiro, who said that these investments will help continue improving the competitiveness of the fleet that is fishing.
This principle is supported by the Secretariat for Rural and Marine Affairs by raising subsidies that contribute to the safety of the crew, improvement of living conditions and of the treatment and preservation of the catch on board, added Maneiro.
The Government of Galicia has already invested more than EUR 13 million in stock and improvement of 360 boats based in the port of this autonomous community, and about EUR 100 million to optimize the Galician sea-industry chain through partnerships with seafood product processing and business firms.
To Maneiro, this aid was “important to get such positive data as the increase in exports of Galician canned products by 11 per cent since 2009”.
Besides, it stressed the government’s support for economic revitalization and promotion of cultural and ethnographic non-urban coastal areas through the Coastal Action Groups. Between 2012 and 2014 this sector obtained approximately EUR 13.7 million, invested in 278 projects distributed along the coast.
With regard to fisheries management, Maneiro highlighted the change in the fishing organizational systems of all the purse seine and trawling fleet segments of the Cantabrian and Northwest fishing area.
He also focused on the strong increase in working days: in trawling by 46 per cent; in smaller-scale and fixed gear by 120 per cent; and the purse seine sector by 175 per cent.
In addition, in the shellfish segment, between 2011 and 2013 an increase of the number of operating licenses was recorded, which changed from 159 (2011) to 306 (2013).
Moreover, between 2013 and 2014 a total of EUR 1.7 million was allocated to repairing and recovery projects of unproductive areas.
The Galician secretary noted that while the average annual seafood landings at auction slowed by 9.3 per cent between 2010 and 2014, compared to 2009, revenues grew by 5.6 per cent due to the 16 per cent average price increase.
The goal is “to fish less and sell better,” he stated.
