Alex Marquez: ‘I didn’t lose my nerve in Valencia’
Filed Under EN
Alex Marquez has spoken of the race which saw him become a World Champion for the first time. The Estrella Galicia 0,0 rider and brother of double MotoGP™ title winner Marc successfully clinched the Moto3™ title earlier this month.
The second of the two Marquez brothers made history on 9th November, clinching his own championship to become half of the first brotherly pairing in history to have clinched Grand Prix World Championship titles. Having run as many as 44 points behind then championship leader Jack Miller earlier in the campaign, Marquez fought back and seized the points advantage after Aragon.
Although title rival Miller did all he could do by winning the season-ending race in Valencia, Marquez secured his first world title by finishing on the podium.
“We never gave up,” Marquez tells motogp.com in a feature-length interview. “We always had in mind the aim of trying to get to the last third of the season with real options of fighting for the title and that is what kept us working hard through the year. It was in Alcañiz that I started to believe that we could win the title, when I took leadership of the championship for the first time. I said to myself: ‘Okay, Alex, you are now leading the standings but you have to keep it. You have to stay focused’.”
In the opinion of Marquez, who for 2015 steps up to Moto2™ with the Estrella Galicia Marc VDS Team, it was a positive mindset that clinched his lightweight crown.
“I managed to stay calm at every moment,” the Spaniard continues. “We kept scoring points and I knew that would take us to Valencia with more possibilities. We were ready to handle and manage any difficult situation we could face without losing our nerve – and that was because of all of the hard work we had done over the weekend.”
