Restrictions enforced on Galicia’s most beautiful beach (Videos)

Ribadeo –
Thought to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain, or possibly in the entire world, “Praia as Catedrais” is a stunning location indeed. With its pristine sand and rugged cliffs, sporting huge and fascinating arches (which brought “cathedral” into the name) and deep and mysterious caves, the beach is extremely popular with Spanish tourists.

Due to its unusual beauty, the Ministry of the Environment of the “Xunta de Galicia,” (local government), declared the beach a Natural Monument, bringing it under the protection of authorities.

Despite the fact that Ribadeo authorities had taken measures to supply more parking areas and had clearly demarcated accessible areas from restricted portions of the environment, due to the popularity of the location, authorities have now been forced to cut down on the number of visitors.

According to El País (Spanish language) on just one day this year, on August 13th, the beach saw a record 14,000 visitors traipsing over the rocky cliffs and beach area within only a few hours. In total for the summer months of July, August and September, the beach received approximately 365,000 visitors. The photo included above shows an enormous number of people visiting the beach, with more queuing for the pleasure at the top of the cliffs.

There will now be a limit of 2,000 to 5,000 persons per day allowed access to the beach, especially in the popular summer months and the Easter holiday week and authorities will police these limits on a regular basis.

On top of these restrictions, on the Pontevedra coastline of Galicia, authorities have also been forced to limit visitors to the Cíes Islands, pictured above, a currently unspoiled archipelago just off the coast in the mouth of the Vigo River. Here visitors have been limited to 2,200 per day and authorities will ensure that these tourists take home their own garbage from the area, as there are no garbage bins available on the islands.

The video at the top of this article is of “Praia as Catedrais” and included below is another video showing the wonders of the Cíes Islands.
