Two men face felony charges in Cascade County District Court after an early Thursday incident in which they allegedly tried to rob a man in downtown Great Falls at gunpoint over a pair of headphones.

Guadalupe Galicia, 23, is charged with felony assault with a weapon and robbery, as well as misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence and carrying a concealed weapon. Loyd Rider III, 27, is charged with accountability to both assault with a weapon and robbery, also felonies. If convicted of the assault and robbery charges, both men face a minimum two-year and maximum 60-year prison sentence.

According to charging documents, police were dispatched to the Zip Trip at 625 1st Ave. N. shortly before 4 a.m., after a man reported he had been threatened with a gun while at the gas station.

He reportedly told officers that he had been approached by two men, identified as Galicia and Rider, who demanded he hand over headphones he was wearing around his neck. Galicia, he reported, then pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his jacket and attempted unsuccessfully to force him into a nearby alley.

Galicia and the man then scuffled over the headphones, police say, during which Galicia allegedly pushed the handgun into the man’s abdomen. The man was then able to flee into the gas station convenience store.

The reported victim also told officers that Galicia and Rider briefly entered the store, showing the firearm to the cashier.

Officers reportedly apprehended the two men six or seven blocks away, based on physical descriptions provided by the reported victim. Both were intoxicated, police say, and a handgun was located in Galicia’s possession.

Police were unable to name the brand of headphones involved in the confrontation Thursday.

Both men were also on probation before their arrest, court documents say.

Galicia was sentenced to serve three years in custody and 20 years on probation in 2007 when he was 15, according to Tribune archives. In that case, he shot 24-year-old Curtis Heavy Runner of Great Falls four times with a .45-caliber handgun after a fight broke out during a drinking party.

Rider was sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years of federal probation in March 2012 after admitting to an assault with a dangerous weapon charge stemming from a 2011 incident where he threatened to shoot his then-girlfriend, his brother, himself and others at a residence on the Blackfeet Reservation. Federal prison records say he was released from custody Aug. 29.

Prosecutors have asked that both Galicia and Rider, set to make initial court appearances Thursday, be held on $500,000 bonds.
