Estrella Galicia 0,0 rider Alex Rins celebrated back-to-back wins after a well timed move on the final lap saw him steal victory from his Honda team-mate Alex Marquez in Misano for the Moto3 San Marino Grand Prix.

Rins, who took his first win of the year at the last round in Silverstone and was also the victor in Misano last season, had lead for much of the race distance only to be reeled in and eventually passed by Marquez just before the start of the final lap.

The number 42 then returned the favour by pulling exactly the same move as the race entered the final corners to sneak an exciting victory at the line by just 0.042s.

The 1-2 for the team is all the more impressive as the Spanish pair both crashed in warm-up, with Rins paying a visit to the medical centre before the race.

Marquez’s second place pulls him closer in the title hunt to championship leader Jack Miller, who’s lead is cut to just nine points.

The Australian had pulled out a huge lead from the opening corner, before being caught and passed by Rins.

The Red Bull KTM rider, who has returned to the original 2014 chassis along with Romano Fenati, then fell back through the field before recovering to secure a clear third, saving a huge wobble along the way.

Off the podium a hotly fought battle for fourth saw Isaac Vinales’ Calvo Team bike edge out the top Italian Enea Bastianini, the Junior GoFun man making up an incredible 13 places after qualifying down in 17th.

Also in that battle was the top Mahindra of Ambrogio Racing rider Brad Binder who was forced to settle for sixth.

Alexis Masbou was next to take the flag almost five seconds later for Ongetta-Rivacold, leading another battling pack to the line.

He was closely followed by Andrea Migno, who has quickly found his feet in the world championship quickly after replacing Arthur Sissis at Mahindra, taking a best finish of eighth from 22nd on the grid.

Juanfran Guevara set a new fastest race lap of Misano to finish just behind in ninth for Mapfre Aspar, with a wild ride from Efren Vazquez handing the SaxoPrint-RTG man the final spot inside the top ten.

Fenati finished where he started despite his best efforts for Sky Racing Team VR46.

The British pair of Danny Kent (Red Bull Husqvarna Ajo) and John McPhee (SaxoPrint-RTG)were next to cross the finish line in 12th and 13th respectively.

The final points went to Ongetta-AirAsia rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin in 14th and Marc VDS rider Jorge Navarro in 15th.

Both Andrea Locatelli and Roman Ramos were forced to drop a position for exceeding the track limits. Locatelli later retired as his Mahindra failed, Ramos was the final finisher in 28th.

In a race filled with crashes Mahindra’s Miguel Oliveira had the biggest misfortune after falling from fourth. He re-joined for 22nd as did Niklas Ajo who crashed his Husqvarna just moments earlier though the Finn later entered the pits.

Matteo Ferrari was the first faller. Also failing to go the distance was Karel Hanika who lost his Red Bull KTM Ajo after chasing down McPhee, and wild-card Gabriel Rodrigo who crashed shortly after. Scott Deroue also failed to make it to the end of the race.

The Sky Racing bike of Francesco Bagnaia retired with mechanical failure.
