As the Moto3 series headed to the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for the San Marino Grand Prix, the Australian Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Ajo) held a 13-point lead over Spaniard Alex Marquez and a 29-point lead over Marquez’s Estrella Galicia 0,0 teammate Alex Rins (Spain).
Rins was coming off a victory at Silverstone and went into the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini looking for another victory — and he got it, further tightening up the Moto3 World Championship with five rounds to go.
Rins edged Marquez by only 0.042 of a second at the finish, moving to 20 points down from Miller. Marquez, meanwhile, closed to only nine points behind Miller with his second place finish. Miller made it to the podium in third position, 3.403 second behind Rins.
Isaac Vinales (Spain) (Calvo Team) finished fourth, 4.459 seconds off the leader, and the rookie Italian rider Enea Bastianini (Junior Team GOFUN Moto3) finished a respectable fifth in front of the home country fans.
Brad Binder (RSA) (Ambrogio Racing) came in sixth, followed by Alexis Masbou (France) (Ongetta-Rivacold), who got his first career victory in Brno finished seventh.
Andrea Migno (Italy) (Mahindra Racing) took eighth, followed by Juanfran Guevara (SP) (Mapfire Aspar Team Moto3) and Efren Vazquez (SP) (SAXOPRINT RTG), who won the Red Bull Indy GP, respectively.
The series moves to Spain for the Gran Premio Moviestar de Aragon-Motorland Aragon on September 28.
