The Secretariat of Rural and Marine Affairs of Xunta de Galicia received about 500 applications for aid from the Galician raft mussel growers to mitigate the losses of the mussel sector due to the occurrence of the red tide in 2013.

The Galician Government is assessing extending the budget for support (EUR 1.5 million) if necessary, said Rosa Quintana, secretary of Marine Affairs.

Besides, it is also working to improve the EU regulation that includes the aid and to ensure that access requirements are less demanding than at present.

The official noted that the Secretariat has developed various measures to alleviate these sector economic losses. And she announced that seven resolutions will be issued to help expand the number of strings in 100 units per raft on 22 polygons.

This initiative will provide the sector with extra capacity of assimilation of the product given the apparent inability to take it to the market.

In addition, and depending on the toxic event, further extensions are being processed at the raft growers’ request.

Besides, the autonomous administration is taking steps together with Agroseguro to improve policies providing relief to the sector when such incidents occur; and enhances the work of the Technological Institute of Marine Environment Control of Galicia (INTECMAR).

This entity employs a very comprehensive control system, which makes it one of the best in the world, stressed the Xunta.

Regarding the recent health alert declared by France, the secretary stated that at all times Galicia defended the traceability of local mussels and stressed that “it is the best in the world.”
