It’s been a good start to Joaquin Larrivey’s career at Celta – a goal on his debut and 4 points from 2 games, has Celta third in the league, behind only Barça and Valencia. He’s been talking to AS on how he’s been getting to grips with his new role in Galicia.

Celta celebrate goal v Getafe.

“Coming to Spain was personal challenge after having six really complicated months at Atlante in Mexico, it wasn’t a well-run club in any sense. The move to Rayo was excellent for me and I thank them for that. Now it’s time for me to continue growing at a club that is just what I’ve been looking for, the exact opposite of how it was in Mexico.

I talked to Eduardo (Berizzo) before I came but I wasn’t sure if it would materalise. The transfer market is an unpredictable thing – every day I would wake up, I’d have an offer from a different club, but Celta convinced me. I talked with my friends Iago Falque (born in Vigo) and Roberto Trashorras (ex-Celta player) – they told me all about life in the city and some other things, it was a pretty easy decision after that.

It’s different to Madrid, that’s for sure. It has lots of nice things but I do miss the sea sometimes. I love Spain as a whole though, I never thought I’d live outside of Argentina until I retired. Just lately, I’ve beginning to realise what a great decision it was.”

Larrivey was then asked about how he’s been feeling in his performances for Celta, as well as if he’s set any goalscoring targets for the season. He also had a bit of time to tell us about his past and current footballing idols…

“It’s always important to get rid of that pressure early on, scoring on my debut always feels good. We played a good game against Getafe, but it always looks better with some goals on the board.

I live better when I’m scoring instead of setting them up but it’s a pleasure to know I’ve helped someone out. I like playing with my fellow South Americans (Orellana and Charles), we have a good relationship because of it.

As the group does, I’ll be taking it game-by-game. At the end of the season, I might have three goals, I might have twenty. I don’t like to look at figures or objectives long term. My only goal is to help the team against Real Sociedad in our next game.

I’ve always attached to Hernán Crespo. He wasn’t very fast, he didn’t dribble much, but he moved in a spectacular way. He produced goals wherever he played and he was beloved for it. I think I have similar characteristics to him on the field. I’ll be happy if I can touch just 1% of the amount of people he did, in his career. My current role model? I’d say Ibrahimovic… he has the strength of three people!”

It wasn’t the best performace in the world against Córdoba, but the Nuevo Arcángel is sure to be one of the toughest away trips in La Liga this season. However, the signs are still there that Celta could one of the teams to watch, with a number of players setting the bar high early.

“Against Córdoba, I didn’t play how I would have wanted to in an ideal world. I wasted a few chances but as you know, I always leave everything I have out on the field. I know chances will come and go, but it’s important I never lose that part of my game.

I could tell early in pre-season that guys like Nolito and Orellana were going to come flying into the season. It’s important we continue to get them in one-v-one situations, that’s where they hurt teams. We are in great shape as a team, especially with guys like these.”
