Alex Rins buried memories of an early celebration in Brno as a perfectly timed lap saw him ease to his third Moto3 pole of the season, at Silverstone.

Though strong cross winds at the track affected the performance of the lightweight bikes early on, the final minutes saw lap times tumble with the Estrella Galicia riders time of 2m 13.112 set with five minutes to spare, avoiding the traffic which held up his rivals.

The pole time also set a new pole record by a margin of 0.395, it was previously held by Maverick Vinales, who before moving up to Moto2 had taken every Moto3 pole at Silverstone since the class was created.

Nico Antonelli found some late pace to secure second on the grid for Junior Team Go Fun, the Italian KTM riders second consecutive front row start.

Rins’ team-mate Alex Marquez took the final slot on the front row in third, having also topped the timesheets just before his fellow Spaniard set the best time of the day in a competitive session.

Antonelli’s team-mate Enea Bastianini heads up row two in fourth on the grid. He is joined by the highest qualifying Mahindra rider, Ambrogio Racing’s Brad Binder in fifth after a blistering final lap and Brno race winner Alexis Masbou in sixth for Ongetta-Rivacold.

Miguel Oliveira’s Mahindra starts seventh on row three. He is joined by championship leader Jack Miller who has endured a tough weekend off the pace in eighth for Red Bull KTM Ajo and Team Calvo’s Isaac Vinales in ninth.

Husqvarna rider Niklas Ajo completes the top ten.

Juanfran Guevara retired with a technical issue but had already done enough work on the Mapfre Aspar bike to hold on to eleventh.

The second Husqvarna with Danny Kent on board starts 12th making him the top British rider at home ahead of SaxoPrint-RTG’s John McPhee who had chatter issues down in 17th.

Andrea Migno who took over from Arthur Sissis at Mahindra is 21st on the grid, while Jorge Navarro, who replaced Livio Loi at Marc VDS starts 26th.

Sky Racing Team VR46 rider Romano Fenati once again has left himself a lot of work to be in contention on race day, improving just a couple of places as qualifying ended for 22nd on the grid.

Top wild-card Jasper Iwema in his second appearance this season with Abbink Racing qualified in 28th after being the first to crash.

British wild-card Joe Irving greatly improved his times on his Redline Motocycles ride for 32nd.

Luca Grunwald withdrew, still troubled by the shoulder he dislocated in Brno.
