Estrella Galicia 0,0 rider Alex Marquez used the final ten minutes of a restarted Moto3 Czech Grand Prix qualifying session to his advantage, leading the late dash for pole with a 2m 07.691 lap.

It marked a great recovery for the Honda rider after losing concentration and track space as the rain arrived suddenly caused him to crash after getting forced wide by the traffic to his inside, John McPhee directly in his path, leaving the Spaniard no option but to ride over the rumble strip, hitting the gravel.

Also earning a front row start were two KTM riders who also circulated in the group who set the pace after the red flag – Team Calvo rider Isaac Vinales, with a career best second place start and Junior Team GoFun rider Niccolo Antonelli.

A solo run saw last year’s pole sitter Alex Rins move into fourth on the grid for Estrella Galicia 0,0, just a shade quicker than the highest placing Mahindra of Miguel Oliveira in fifth.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Jack Miller was a frustrated sixth, at one point lashing out and hitting Francesco Bagnaia, the struggle for track space getting into his head as the Ajo team riders continued their tactic of circling together, he improved on time but not position as the chequered flag arrived.

Alexis Masbou took seventh for Ongetta-Rivacold after leading for most of qualifying with an early quick lap as crashes and the weather played their part in halting the progress for most of the field until the final action packed ten minutes.

Indianapolis winner Efren Vazquez clung on to eighth on the grid despite a late high side from his SaxoPrint-RTG bike ending his session and slowing the final flying lap for many.

The second Junior Team GoFun of rookie rider Enea Bastianini starts ninth one place ahead of fellow Italian Romano Fenati in tenth.

Fenati’s qualifying was eventful, braving the worst of the weather for Sky Racing Team VR46 when as the first shower arrived he found himself down in a desperate 27th .

One of only a handful of riders to attempt to improve in the wet, he moved into tenth as the rain drizzled and the wind increased before moving up to second as the track started to dry out only to see his time bettered in the final minutes, returning him to tenth spot.

John McPhee was never far from Marquez and tailed him to eleventh for SaxoPrint-RTG, one place ahead of fellow Brition Danny Kent in twelfth for Husqvarna.

Jakub Kornfeil was the best of the home riders in 13th for Team Calvo, Red Bull’s Karel Hanika was 17th and had a late spill as the clock reached zero.

Wild-card Gabriel Rodrigo starts 27th for RBA Racing Team.
Joining the crash list were Eric Granado who slid off his Calvo at turn three with 20 minutes remaining and Philipp Oettl who dived through the gravel, his bike damaging the fencing, the resulting hole in the air-bag bringing out the red flag before the final ten minutes of qualifying got under way.
