A woman had really bad luck Wednesday evening. She was alone in her van, driving near the town of Monforte de Lemos in Galicia, Spain, when she reached a rail crossing. Her vehicle stalled as a train was coming and while she immediately fled, she was hit by the wreckage of her own van.
57-year-old María Jesús Izquierdo had been driving a Peugeot Partner van when she reached the open level crossing near Monforte de Lemos. There was excellent visibility, and trains have a speed restriction of 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph) at that point, so she decided to cross.
However, just as she was crossing the railway line, her van stalled. Soon afterwards, the train, pulling around a dozen carriages of cement, came towards the crossing.
The train conductor saw Izquierdo immediately leave her vehicle and run, just as the train driver tried to stop the train, but it was too late.
According to witnesses on the scene, the woman ran forward and parallel to the track. As the train smashed into the vehicle, it was thrown in the same direction and rolled, crushing Izquierdo.
When emergency services arrived on the scene, Izquierdo was already dead. At 10:30 pm a tow truck lifted away the remains of her vehicle and the road was closed to traffic for an hour and forty minutes.
