The Atlantic salmon farming project in cages in the estuary of Muros and Noia, Galicia, has favourable biological, environmental and technical reports.

This was announced by the head of the Secretariat for Rural and Marine Affairs of the Xunta de Galicia, Rosa Quintana, who reported to Parliament that the new experimental salmon farming concession in these waters was granted to the company North West Food SL through a formal resolution issued on 10 May, 2013.

“It would be irresponsible not to be able to find out if Galicia can be a power in salmon farming, always compatible with the social, economic and environmental development of our estuaries,” said the Galician official.

The new legislation authorizes the above mentioned company to develop an initiative that includes the progressive installation of up to six cages.

Quintana stressed that this authorization was granted in a transparent manner and informing the industry about the process at all times, and that the main unionists in the estuary of Muros and Noia as well as the representatives of associations of platform workers in the region had already been informed.

She also stressed the responsibility of the Xunta de Galicia to show the sector and society that the initiative is socially, economically and environmentally feasible, and salmon farming in Galician waters is a potential source of wealth and employment.
