Texas City man charged in crash that killed son

GALVESTON – The driver of a car that rolled over in Texas City, killing his 3-year-old son and injuring three other children, was charged Friday with driving while intoxicated with a passenger younger than 15.
Jesse Galicia, 23, of Texas City also was charged with tampering with evidence for trying to alter the accident scene, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said.
Narcotics were found in the vehicle, and he is suspected of being under the influence of an as-yet-undetermined substance, Trochesset said.
Galicia is being held in the Galveston County Jail under $310,000 bail.
Galicia’s son, also named Jesse, was thrown from the 2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer after it veered off Interstate 45 north about noon Thursday and rolled over on a grass median separating the highway from the feeder road.
A 5-year-old girl also was thrown from the car, Trochesset said. The girl and a 2-year old boy were severely injured and taken to the University of Texas Medical Center in Galveston, he said.
A UTMB spokeswoman said the hospital was unable to release any information about the condition of the children.
A 7-month-old girl was treated at the scene and released to her grandmother.
Trochesset said the surnames of the other three children were different from Galicia’s and their names would not be released until their parents were identified.
Trochesset said investigators were trying to determine whether the children were in car restraints as required by law.
Galicia said the Trailblazer had a mechanical steering problem. Trochesset said the felony charge of driving while intoxicated with a child in the car could be affected by whether a mechanical problem contributed to the accident.
