Despite dropping both games of a doubleheader Saturday in Eureka, Nev., Whittell softball coach Dave Galicia was happy with the teams performance.

“Eureka is top-dog in our league right now, but I’m really happy with the way the weekend went,” Galicia said. “Both games, Eureka had to bring their A-game.”

Eureka’s only loss of the season was a 4-0 decision against Wells. Eureka is unbeaten at home.

In the first game, Eureka tallied five runs in the first inning, one in innings two through five and two in the sixth. The Lady Warriors scored two in the third and fifth innings and added five in the seventh but were unable to complete the comeback. The game ended 11-9.

Liz Anderson and Eva Fuller-Wilmarth each hit a home run in the game. Anderson now has two on the season and is hitting .400 for the season.

In game two, Eureka had an 8-4 lead going into the seventh. Whittell made one “costly” error and Eureka put two more on the board sealing the deal for a 10-4 Whittell loss.

Fuller-Wilmarth hit another home run in game two, her second of the doubleheader

“We’re improving and when we go and play the top team and have a chance to win I’m very happy with that,” Galicia said. “Our seniors are really stepping in to take the lead of the team.”

Kelsey Kjer pitched two complete games and combined for 11 strike outs and seven walks.

Next, the Lady Warriors travel to Manteca, Calif., for a tournament.

“We always try to travel over spring break so the girls can get more experience,” Galicia said. “It sets the stage for the team to play it’s best for the end of the season.”
