It is with deep sadness we report that Monday afternoon, featherweight boxer Oscar Gonzalez (23-3, 14KO’s) passed away at age 23, on Monday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained in a 10th round knockout loss to Jesus Galicia Saturday night in Mexico City.
Earlier reports stating Gonzalez was in a coma, On Sunday, Gonzalez’s wife, Magaly Avalos, was reportedly told that part of her husband’s brain was dead.
Gonzalez had informed his wife prior that he did not want to be alive in such condition.
Canelo Promotions has agreed to pay funeral expenses and tweeted their condolences.
“Oscar Gonzalez was a brilliant prospect and he had been known by the WBC for several years,” said World Boxing Council (WBC) Secretary General Mauricio Sulaiman to The Ring online.
“His fight was not a brutal fight, but we need to continue looking for prevention. This is just an unfortunate accident that reinforces the need to look for proper safety methods for the boxers in order to make boxing safer.”
Gonzalez was best known for a unanimous decision victory over former 122-pound world champion Rico Ramos last April. He was on a three-bout winning streak going into Saturday’s match.
His body will be moved to Tepic of Nayarit, Mexico. He is survived through his wife and parents.
